Absence

At Â鶹ԭ´´, our goal is to empower every student to reach their full potential. We are committed to providing outstanding educational experiences, and research clearly demonstrates the importance of regular school attendance. For instance:

  • Students who miss between 10-20% of school have only a 35% chance of achieving 5 or more good GCSEs (Grade 4 or higher).
  • Missing school just twice a month can result in nearly four weeks of lost learning over the academic year.

Students are expected to arrive on time, every day. If you child suffers from illness or a medical condition in the meantime, please refer to the NHS Too ill for school document . This is the recommended guidance published by the Department for Education and clearly indicates when to keep a student at home and times when they can be best supported within school.

We acknowledge that students may be impacted from mental health and well-being related absences, please refer to the support available under Emotional Health and Wellbeing or contact the student well-being team within the academy to arrange a meeting.

Reporting and Supporting Student Attendance:

What YOU must do:

  • Contact the absence line (01422 244890) before 8.15am each day of your child’s absence
  • Tell the academy in advance, of any medical appointments and bring in appointment cards/letters
  • If you are not sure whether your child is well enough to attend school, send them in anyway as we have a range of medical and well-being support staff
  • Have a backup plan for if your child misses transport, call on a family member, neighbour or friend
  • If you and your child are experiencing difficulties with school attendance, then contact your College Manager / Phase Leader / Educational Welfare Officer

What WE will do:

  • Check and monitor your child’s attendance every day
  • Phone home to discuss your child’s attendance with you
  • Invite you into school for attendance meetings if we are concerned
  • If we cannot establish a reason for absence, then we may make a welfare home visit to support your child

Holidays During Term-Time

Holidays during term-time will not be authorised and will be recorded as unauthorised absence. Further information is available within the Attendance and Punctuality Policy below.

The academy operates different holiday patterns with some holiday weeks that are classed by tour operators as out of term-time, meaning that it is possible to secure cheaper deals.
